I saw the Sailor Fude mentioned on social media a lot lately as an excellent fountain pen for sketching. It’s usually best not to believe the hype, but at £13 I felt it was a risk I could take. I’m seriously impressed with the Sailor Fude. The nib is very smooth and the ink flows well. I’m left-handed so this can be a bit of an issue. It’s designed to work like a brush, so the width of the stroke varies depending on the angle the pen is held and will take a bit of getting used to. I’ll probably order another so I can have a couple of ink colours on the go at the same time. Full marks from me, highly recommended.

I love the variation you get from fude nib pens. I’ve watched Paul Heaston use this pen for a while now on Instagram and his drawings are sensational!It’s very reasonably priced for the quality. Ink flow is consistent, I’m using DeAtrimentis at present. I can draw with the pen upside down for very fine lines with little flow issues which is great.Traditional look to it, shame it’s plastic but it can’t be perfect, but that helps to keep it light, it has a gold nib (assume it’s not real gold of course).I’d highly recommend getting this for sketching with, see example picture that I did.It’s great for Urban Sketching.

If you want to experiment with a Fude nib and don’t want to commit to the cost of a more expensive pen then this is a good option.It writes beautifully and has a very elegant appearance,

it is an excellent instrument for the price. the nib is smooth and flexible, shines with good quality black ink. I can imagine its as good for drawing as it is for your copperplate or round hand. it doesn’t take a standard ink cartridge and sailor cartridges are expensive so I recommend purchasing a dedicated sailor converter. The body is plastic but doesn’t feel cheap. definitely love the colour. Overall a great instrument, excellent performer, and Made in Japan !

The bent fude style nib allows lines of different thicknesses. Ideal for fast, spontaneous sketching and mark making. My new favourite sketch pen.

Really interesting pen to use, with the ability to draw anything from a hair-line upwards. It takes time to get used to it, but the ink flows well whichever way it's used. Picture of my first sketch with it attached.

I not wont to leave regular reviews of the things I buy from Amazon but this Sailor Fude De Mannen 55 degree fountain pen is absolutely worthy of one. The ink flows like a dream and it feels buttery smooth writing or drawing on even the cheapest paper. Now you can vary the stroke writing at a more upright angle and that's just find and dandy but it really does come into it's own writing with the angles nib flat against the paper for the broadest strokes. This was the role I bought it for and I was very pleased to find it copes well in this mode with a soft flowing writing or drawing style and does not need a stilted, slow focused movements and regular lifts. All round very happy with the pen.
