Japanese Pens grow on you

Japanese pens are quite pricey in the UK and not that widely sold, but as I had heard that the writing experience was different with them, this Sailor was priced at an attractive price to see what the fuss was all about. It appears that, along with the Germans, the Japanese venerate fountain pens and, naturally, seem to arguably make the best pens again along with the Germans. Writing with the Sailor is a very different experience to a Pelikan or Parker. There is far more response from the paper and while the writing is smooth one does not write as if one is sliding on an ice rink - which is perhaps the aim of some fountain pen manufacturers in Europe. But this responsiveness is by no means an unpleasant feeling and I found I increasingly wanted to take this pen out and write with it! Japanese nibs do appear to be one size finer - so if you like a fine line then you should buy a medium nib. They even have UEF - ultra extra fine nibs which are as the name implies. I am dying to try one of these to see if it can balance this very fine line with some smoothness. A very enjoyable pen and a great introduction to Japanese pens.

Stunning craftsmanship

A beautiful pen, and a pure delight to write with. It is, however, rather small and delicate, so I prefer to use it posted.

As sweet as the more expensive models.

I have four different Sailor pens. Let me tell you that this pen delivers close to the full Sailor sweetness, despite the rather reasonable price. Strongly recommended if you like Japanese fountain pens. Actually, strongly recommended if you like fountain pens. Period.Typical for Japanese pens, is that the point is a bit finer than European or Chinese pens. So 'Medium/Middle' point corresponds to 'fine', for instance.Typical for Sailor, is that the nib is slightly more springy, than the typically stiff nib of Parker, Pelikan, Sheaffer, Waterman. Also, it's not quite as ice-skatingly smooth. There's a little bit more tactile feel and friction. This is not something wrong. It's not 'scratchy'. It's just a very slight amount of pleasant friction. I'm brought up on stiff and oil-on-glass-smooth, but I also enjoy the Sailor feel very much. Personally, I also like to have some amount of cultural difference apparent in my pens, so I let my Japanese pens have a finer nib than I normally use. (Also, it has its other uses). The black resin feels very good in the hand. It has an 'expensive' feeling. Just like celluloid and ebonite, but different. And it's lovely super-gloss smooth. It is a delicate and very light pen, just like most expensive pens, since it's all resin, and no cheap metal tubing. This pen quickly established itself as my favorite Sailor pen, mostly because I dare use it much more, because it's 'affordable'.
