The darker roots of Yu-Gi-Oh!...and it's just as enjoyable as the rest!
There are nowhere near enough reviews for this fantastic 3-in-1 edition of the manga, so hopefully this will help you make an educated decision on whether to purchase it or not.First of all it's important to look at how the manga is actually put together. With 3 volumes packed into 1, the book is much thicker than your standard manga. The individual pages however are thinner than usual to ensure that the manga isn't too thick. If you take good care of your manga then this should be of no problem, but those who are a little more rough when skimming through or turning over can easily end up tearing the pages. It's also worth noting that if you purchase each volume separately then you will have all the various cover arts. With the 3-in-1 editions you only have one cover. Basically, this edition is value for money and you won't be disappointed. Now for the actual content itself. Those considering this as a purchase so that you can enjoy the hugely popular trading card game in its manga form should know that you won't exactly be getting that. The Yu-Gi-Oh! manga first started with Yami Yugi playing a wide variety of games, not just the trading card game 'Duel Monsters'. The card game is still there but is only featured in a couple of chapters and was known back then as 'Magic and Wizards'.This part of the manga that you are buying had an anime adaption but due to the darker, violent and generally more serious nature it was never dubbed or released outside of Japan. The series was simply called 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' but it is known better by most fans as 'Season 0'.Even if you are looking for the card game I would totally recommend trying this part of the manga out. There's something extremely satisfying about Yami Yugi taking down the bad guys with games that involve explosive air hockey, digital pets, bottles of chloroform, guns, tasers...and much more! One thing I will say about the manga is that quite a few chapters follow the same formula. Yugi or his friends are threatened or wronged, Yami Yugi appears to challenge them to a game and then the problem is solved. However since each game is so unique and since Yami Yugi always finds an excellent method for victory, I can't help but overlook the formulaic aspect. The artwork by Kazuki Takahashi is great. I'm not one for reviewing artwork but I will say that the art presented here is gorgeous and you can even notice a change in style as the manga goes on. One part in particular that impressed me was the artwork for the monsters within the 'Magic and Wizards' section. They seem to almost jump off the page, making things far more engaging. There are a few notes here and there in the manga that will explain certain words to the reader which is a massive help. The cherry on the cake for me was the various games that you could do yourself scattered around the manga. I haven't actually made markings in the book but you can find things such as 'Spot the difference', a little Millennium Puzzle maze and even a Yu-Gi-Oh! version of 'Where's Wally?'.Overall I have thoroughly enjoyed this manga and as a person with limited budget I will be going on to collect all of the 3-in-1 editions to complete the set. The story is unbelievably fun, the value incredibly awesome and it's Yu-Gi-Oh! like some people have never seen it before. What's not to like?

Very Good Read
Very good seeing the original Japanese version translated and uncensored I really enjoyed reading it and I want to get the rest of the volumes. Only thing I wish it had was colour but the black and white makes it feel more old school I guess. Definitely worth picking up

Great book first manga book I’ve bought of one of my favourite anime’s when I was growing up. Paper is a little thin but still durable. It’s a great read and highly recommend if your a fan of the show.

An enjoyable start to the franchise
Like many people I came to the 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' Series through the anime and card game before discovering this original manga that the franchise was based on. This first omnibus edition of the manga contains the first three volumes of the series and although the structure of the story is largely episodic, it is nonetheless an enjoyable and compulsive read. The plot of the series sees the bullied high school boy Yugi Mutou solving the Millennium Puzzle, a mysterious puzzle from Ancient Egypt that has been unsolved for the past 3000 years. After solving the Millennium Puzzle, Yugi begins to unlock its power and uses it to punish those who harm him and his friends. As I said before much of the plot of these first three volumes consists of episodic game-of-the-week stories, lasting one or two chapters, where a jerk harms Yugi or one of his friends who is then punished by Yugi’s other self. The only change to this formula is during Chapters 13 to 20 that introduce Shadi, a mysterious Egyptian man with his own Millennium Items who wishes to unlock the secrets of the Millennium Puzzle by whatever means necessary. Although the franchise is mostly known for the card games, the game itself only appears in a two chapter storyline that sees Yugi go up against Seto Kaiba. The series began in the late nineties and the artwork is good of the era with some nice scenes throughout. The translation of the series is good as well with translation footnotes throughout the book and also retains the original Japanese names (Anzu Mazaki rather than Téa Gardner etc.) for everything except card names. This first omnibus of the 'Yu-Gi-Oh!' original manga was a good, if somewhat simple, start to the series and should interest anyone who is a fan of the franchise. Overall I would give these three volumes four stars.
