A wonderful primer on Zen and the art of archery.

What a delight to receive Paulo’s latest bestseller via Amazon this week - it is a wonderful book for several reasons. It’s a beautiful keepsake volume with inspiring illustrations by award-winning illustrator Christoph Niemann that are in perfect harmony with the subject of this book: inspirational meditations on Zen and the art of archery.Zen Buddhism can, for those of us growing up in the west, be very difficult to grasp in it’s multiple paradoxes, but this book eases the reader into the very essence of the philosophy through the analogy of archery. As Paulo says in his blog, ‘It is a short book, you don’t need to complicate things. In fact, life is simple. We complicate a lot. And a fable or allegory talks to the hidden parts of ourselves.’Why did Paulo choose the art of archery as the analogy to reveal the life-art of Zen? Besides being a weapon of war, in many ancient texts on Buddhism, listed among the sacred implements is the bow and arrow. The premise is simple; by understanding the art of archery, we can learn the art of Zen - which is the art of life. In addition to this, archery is Paulo’s favourite sports pastime, so he has a knowledge of the intricacies of the skills needed. What can we learn from archery about Zen and the art of life? Through his poetic and soulful thoughts. Paulo offers insights into a number of key lessons from Zen:Know and respect your allies in the contest, while learning from their successes and failures. The bow is your greatest asset and is the source of your energy.Your intention is within the arrow. The object of your focus is the target. How you execute a successful shot - from your posture, through letting fly the arrow, to hitting the target - is the same as the skills you need in life. The Archer will not leave my bedside and my guess is over many years, I will subliminally commit most of the wisdom it imparts to memory. Even if I never become a full time student of Zen Buddhism, I will at least have learned to adopt it’s most essential life enriching lessons by making this book my daily companion.Thank you Paulo!

The Archer

After reading a couple of Paulo's books I had a certain expectation. I was expecting to be taken on a journey to a new time and place. I was looking for a story woven into history, emotion, dreams and to be painted a vivid picture of a journey.I was wrong, the book took me less than an hour to read. However once I reached the end, it was then I realised the journey that I had been on. I got lost with getting to the destination without realising or paying attention to the journey I was on.He writes about a Master archer, the archery does not make him a master but the art of it does. The steps, the meaning, the reason for repetidivnes etc...At times you go astray but the closer you get to the end of the book the more you begin to understand the master and his way of life. Even without a bow and arrow, he was still the master, the teachings, understanding, patience and virtue are still with you if you choose to accept. Not a typical Coelho book but one that makes you think and challenges yourself nonetheless. Well worth the read, very thought provoking and opens you up to a different style of story telling/writing.

A beautifully illustrated cash grab

I have previously read the alchemist by Paolo Coehlo and found it quite a charming if somewhat vapid book. So I chose to pick this up. This book takes place following a boy who wants to learn the skills to become an archer and is essentially one long metaphor for how to live life. However, instead of giving us a story which would show the merits of the lifestyle of an archer and allow us to understand them, the author instead lazily writes the ‘rules of being an archer’ in a list like fashion essentially making the book a series of lousy metaphors where we are presented with one rule after another, each having its own page. This plotless book felt like it would have taken the author barely more than a couple of hours to write with no research and very little substance . The book really felt like a cash grab from Paolo Coehlo, and I feel it was rather shameful. At least the illustrations were beautiful.

Powerful words - a must for these times!

Such a powerful book and one I know I will read again and again. This book is a must in these times, it gives us invaluable life lessons that will lead us to understand ourselves on a deeper level. It will make us reflect on how we do things and how to optimise our potential - ultimately it will improve our lives. I highly recommend it and will be buying it for friends and family 💫

Be warned! Very expensive short story.....

I always look forward to Paulo Coelho’s books but this book is not one of my favourites. 130 pages with many of these pages double page illustrations or blank pages it is overly expensive. Unless you are a fan and want the hardback version for your collection my advice would be to wait for the paperback version. More of a fable or short story - not a novel. Very disappointed
